Big Papi

David Ortiz is playing the last year of his contract with the Boston Red Sox, the team picked up the twelve million dollar option in the off season. At the time it was thought that Ortiz was looking for a multi year deal, at the time Papi was 34 years old and probably looking at his last big payday. Well here we are 2 and a half months into the season and its looking as if that might have been the best thing for him. As of June 7th the greatest clutch hitter in Red Sox history was on a tear, he ended May hitting 342 with 10 home runs, he was named AL player of the week for the fifth time in his career, but the first time since August of 2007. Big Papi rankes 1st in home runs (13), 2nd in batting ave, 2nd in doubles(18), 1st in total bases(126), and 1st in sluging pct.(594), he is also hitting 355 against lefties. Ortiz has struggled the past two seasons with slow starts, that hasn't been the case this year, he is driving the ball to all fields, ans Papi is once again catching up to the inside heat. There is one DH in baseball with a higher batting average, that's Travis Hafner hitting 345, Hafner has 113 at bats, Big Papi has 212 at bats. There are always teams looking for power left handed bats, with Ortiz hiiting well over 300 look for more the just the Yankees and Red Sox to be interested in signing him this off-season, it's not likely that the Red Sox will be able to keep his services if there looking to extend him one year at a time. If Theo and Co come at Ortiz with a one year deal, no maater what the price tag, look for the Yankees to sweep in and offer a multi year (probably 3 years) deal with plenty of money up front.
